Common Sea Kayaking Injuries – An Instructional Series

Posted by on February 20, 2012

With the 2012 sea kayaking season just around the corner we’re all getting pretty psyched to hit some warmer water! That makes this a great time to dust off the paddling cobwebs and there’s no better place to start than with some safety review. In this series of posts I aim to comment on the following:

  1. Identify Common Paddling Injuries
  2. Present Prevention and Treatment Strategies for Each Injury Type Including:
  • Muscle and joint injuries
  • Cuts and abrasions
  • Heat-related injuries
  • Sea sickness
  • Cold-related injuries
  • Shoulder dislocation
  • Life-threatening emergencies

***Note that these conditions are presented in order from most likely to very unlikely.

Check back for future posts in this series to help you make a safer and more well-informed paddler. I’ll leave you with an obvious but important kayaking safety message:

Happy and Safe Paddling!

-Kayak Dave
