Run of the Charles 2012

Posted by on April 30, 2012

It was a lovely, but blustery, day down by the River Charles for the 30th Annual Run of the Charles Kayak and Canoe Race. This great event hosted by the Charles River Watershed Association involved over 1100 paddlers vying for the fastest time on a variety of courses ranging from 6 miles to an epic 26 miles. The sunny day offered a great opportunity to test out my new digital SLR camera; the Canon Rebel T2i. I set up shop right at the finish line to wait for the paddlers to round the bend.

For some reason this was the first time that I was able to make it out to this particular event on the New England kayak racing circuit. As expected, the event drew some of the area’s best competition. I noticed many familiar faces from my kayak racing days including Wesley Echols and others from SurfskiRacing.com as they crossed the finish line after tearing up the course in their ultra-fast surfskis. I was equally impressed with the wide array of racing kayaks present at the event. Surfskis (including Epic, Stellar, Fenn, and Huki) and racing canoes dominated but Thunderbolts, Mohicans, and Olympic K-1s also came out in force. There was even a dragon boat in the mix!

One unexpected sight that came around the bend was our very own Alex Russo who was paddling his Dagger Meridian to an exceptional 2nd place finish in the touring division of the 6 mile loop race. Great job, Alex!

And they’re off! Start of the 6 mile race.
