Normally, KayakDave.com is a lobster-free zone (those of you who are close to me can probably understand why that may be) but I’ve decided to make an exception for this particular crustacean because it’s so cool looking and rare!
Yes, this lobster is real and no, someone didn’t paint it to look like that! It was caught a few days before Halloween by lobsterman Dana Duhaime of Beverly, MA who has since donated the lobster to the New England Aquarium. According to marine biologists this is a rare ‘split’ lobster that’s characterized by two distinct colors on each side of its body. The split is due to a “complete cellular division” that occurs when the lobster egg is first fertilized. Orange-black (Halloween), split lobsters are exceedingly rare; occurring roughly once in 50 to 100 million lobsters.
Pretty cool, huh??
